How to Bet on Baccarat | Baccarat Betting

Baccarat is an elegant casino game that also holds the honor of being James Bond’s card game of choice. It is often played by the richest of the high rollers. Extremely unpredictable, this game involves placing blind bets on two outcomes, the Banker having the higher hand and the player.

In this game, two hands of two cards each from a shoe are dealt. It is usually filled with 8 decks of cards. One hand is called the Player hand while the other one is called the Banker hand. Any number of players can bet on the outcome of each hand, choosing either to bet that the Banker or the Player hand will be closer to nine.

A winning bet on the banker’s hand pays even money. The house usually charges a 5 per cent commission on each winning bankers’ bet. The probability of a banker’s hand winning is 50.7 per cent. Even with the 5 per cent commission, you are less likely to lose money if you are betting on the banker’s hand. If the house commission, however, were 6 per cent or more, then it would be wise to bet on player’s hand.

The player’s hand too is an even money bet. Very rarely does the house charge commission on winning player bets. At many casinos, players around the baccarat table can be found keeping track of the outcome of each hand, analysing the results for a pattern on which they can base their next bet.

Baccarat Winning strategies

Baccarat does not require any decision-making skill from the player. Bets have to be placed before the cards are dealt. So, there is no strategy as such to maximise the payout per hand. At best, you can try to take advantage of the occasional streaks that show up in every game of chance, called as “following the shoe”. This implies that if a player wins one hand, you bet on the player for the next hand.

Whether you want to adjust your pattern of betting while you follow the shoe obviously depends on the size of your bankroll and on how long you want your bankroll to last. You may like to use a conservative betting strategy that involves increasing your wager after a winning bet, but only for the four hands following that win. This allows you to maximise your winnings without unnecessarily putting your bankroll in danger.

Baccarat Betting Strategy Example

Say you bet $5 on the hand. If you win, you bet $15 on the next hand. If you lose this hand, you bet $5 on the next hand while if you win, you bet $20. If you lose the next hand, you go back to your original $5 bet while if you win, your bet goes up to $25. If you lose the next hand, you revert to your $5 bet while if you win, your next bet is $30. Irrespective of the outcome of the $30 hand, you go back to the $5 bet. Unlike other well-known betting strategies, this strategy is fool proof to ensure that you are not robbed off on a single bet. You do not increase your bet after losing hands. If you keep winning, you repeat the cycle after 5 rounds rather than increasing your bet indefinitely. This is a very important factor in sound betting, because, the house edge, even if slight, will catch up with you eventually.

How to Bet on Baccarat

The deal passes around the table in a clockwise fashion between the betting parties. Players can elect to pass the shoe also. The player dealing will deal out 2 cards and pass them on to the table banker who is usually a casino man in charge of chips. The first hand dealt is usually the player hand and the second hand is usually the Banker hand.

Card values are added together to result in a score for each hand between 0 and 9. Suit is ignored. Face cards are worth 10 each, aces are worth 1, and all cards between 1 and 9 are worth their face value. When cards are added together, the digits in the tens places are dropped, making the ones place digit as the score. Face cards are therefore worth no value.

If the player stands, the banker takes a hit on hands that read 5 or less. If the player hits, it depends on the value of the player’s hit card and the banker’s score.

Playing this game could be compared to a classy version of betting on coin tosses. You are betting blindly, deciding to put in money on either the banker or the player hand even before the cards have been dealt.

This is what makes this game more exciting, dramatic and extremely unpredictable. Moreover, this is exactly why it is more a game of instinct than science. You can’t read the hand, so go ahead and follow your gut feeling. Play as loose as you want and have all the fun out of it.
